Is there anyone from the SF area who would be kind enough to let me play around on final cut for a few hours to brush up? I promise I wont fuck up your computer or do anything stupid. I have a friend helping me out on Sunday, but Id really like to get more hours of brushing up in before monday's interview, I have to get this job!
October 13th, we shot at 3 locations, our visual
working while we set up for the next shots. I was
importing footage into Final Cut by 6pm. By 2am I had
picture-lock and I handed off to John Madden for

Even at the highest quality setting, I get footage that, I feel, could be better.

Just wondering what program I should be using to get the best quality footage out of my camera?
PS: I have tried...
Nero 6
Adobe Premiere (lots of drop out)
For those of you unfamiliar with "Blink of an Eye," his brief book on editing, Walter Murch is a genius, a truly great editor and a great educator.

The film's a talking head interview of Murch, intercut with specific examples of his work that illustrate his words. It's a wonderful way to re-experience and deepen your understanding of key moments of such movies as "The Godfather," "The Conversation," "Apocalypse Now," and others.

And you'll learn a lot more about editing in 90 minutes. If you can, catch other screenings at the festival. When I went, Murch was there for insightful Q&A afterwards.

Lately there has been alot of "misinformation" given to us through the media and through the US Government. What is F-9? is it the latest scare? What is the truth about what our government does and how they take control of our culturally collective mind share? What do you think? Please watch this video, interact by leaving me a comment andpoke around the net looking for the truth. You will find it. It should also be fun.

I made another DVD, just as simple, using a QT file that is 2.38 GB and the resulting audio/video ts files are 330.1 MB in size.

The first DVD is about an hour long and the second is about 10 minutes. So is the size of the DVD just dependent upon the length of time of the clips, not the original size? What I would like to do is put all three nights of my show on one DVD. The size of all three of those non independent clips is 2.81 GB, enough memory on a DVD, but all three clips is about 3 hours.

Hey guys, I need your opinion on something. My family has a giant box filled with hi-8 cassettes of our old family vacations. I want to transfer them to DVD before the tapes get ruined. BUT, since m parents don't know when to "cut", a lot of the videos are hours and hours long.

So I wanted to edit it down to a viewable size. (add transitions, music, etc) I have Adobe Premiere 6.0, Windows XP, 2.4 GHz Pentium 4, and 2 GBs of RAM.

My questions is what do you recommend I should buy to capture the video from my camcorder to my hard drive. I used to have a ATI ALL-In-Wonder card that had video in and did a decent job, but I no longer have that card.

I purchased a Pinnacle USB Video Capture device, and returned the next day because the quality of the imported video sucked and would crash my computer every 5 minutes or so when capturing. Also, the mpg files that it created couldn't be opened in Premiere because it used a non-standard data rate.

Anyways, I'm willing to spend 200 dollars or less, but there are so many products out there, I was wondering if you guys knew a good quality one. I know some of the more expensive ones come bundled with video editing software which I DONT need since I already own Adobe Premiere. (which I think is one of the best video editing programs available for Windows)

Any suggestions?

It could be quite profitable for you and a real life changer. We are in pre-production of three others...one on black jazz in Paris after WWII until now. We have a Turkish captain/crew/cook on our 70' Gulet, 6 double staterooms still available, all with their own head (toilet and shower). Qualifications? Simply to be able to get along with people. Age? Our producer is 60, our editor is 25. Age inmaterial if you are young in spirit. If you have video experience (HD MiniDV PAL and Final Cut Pro, writing) all the better, but we are doing this to perhaps expand the focus of our documentary which is based on the mystical aspects of Alexander the Great - Title: Force of Evidence. Creative people get free reign as long as they don't sink the ship or the project. We are interested to add some human interest...profound, provocative, funny...to the program, so film making experience in not a requirement. Come for a week or two months.
Thanks!

This airing is sadly only available inside San Francisco on Cable (EATV), but it has already aired 4 times on the 127 outlets in the state of California that are supplied by the CCCSAT satellite (we got picked up in April, aired in April and May).
I would be most grateful for viewers, and following that, any feedback that might make future projects quality.
This is a very exciting thing for all of us here, and hopefully is one of the many fractured introductions that Whaddya Gonna Do About It? Productions have been leaking out for the last few years.
Our first feature, which predates 30.30 by one year, will be releasing soon, so there is a huge amount of product in the pipeline coming out soon for those who like our styles.

This was a history making endeavor that has been universally reacted to with shock and awe. No one in history had ever attempted to make 30 films in 30 days, but we attempted and succeeded.

Please support this and forward to as many people as you can. A single shot is all most of us will ever get... I have been very fortunate, blessed really, to be able to achieve some of my dreams, but they need to be shared with an audience, and there is no better audience than that of my peers and fellow artists.

Call for Works for the 60x60 project

Subject: 60x60 (2006) Call for 60 second silent video shorts

The Following is the Call for 60 second silent video shorts for the 60x60 project in 2006

Vox Novus is inviting video artists to submit silent video shorts 60 seconds or less in length to be included in its fourth annual collaboration with the 60x60 project. 60 videos will be paired with 60 audio tracks from composers selected that year. The screening will include the 60 video shorts paired with the audio shown in succession for one hour.

There will be no pause between the pieces. Works may be less than 60 seconds in length, but may not exceed 60 seconds. Credits will be added to the end of the feature. Video selected that is less than 60 seconds long will be “padded” with neutral frames either before, after, or surrounding the composition. Please note that the total duration of the work including silence may NOT exceed sixty seconds.

Excerpts of larger works are strongly discouraged. 60x60 is a project of “signature works” and short works created specifically for the 60x60 project.

The call is open to artists of any nationality, age, or career stage. Works submitted must not have been previously performed or broadcasted. Submissions must be labeled with the artist's name and the title of the work. The submission form must be sent at the same time with the submitted work. Submission form must contain the artist’s name, address, email, phone number, title, length, and credits on a separate sheet (typed). Biographies and program notes may be included on a separate sheet, but must be typed and each may be no longer than 100 words in length.

Multiple works may be submitted. Each work must be noted on the submission form(s) and clearly indicated. Do Not send originals! No works will be returned, and may be performed in subsequent performances after the debut concert. All submissions must be postmarked by September 15, 2006. Selected works will be announced on December 15, 2006. Submission of the work(s) in DV must be accompanied by the submission form and sent to:

Deadline: Submissions must be postmarked by September 15, 2006

Submissions must include: Submission Form (including bio and program notes) and a labeled CD containing the submission in audio format. Submission forms can be downloaded at http://www.VoxNovus.com/60x60.htm or by written request to Vox Novus

The camera used is a JVC, My editor can not edit HDV..
So Now I am looking to transfer HDV to DV
1. Any suggestions?
The DP is unwilling to let us use the camera for playback, and I have found that JVC formats it's tapes different than say SONY or PANASONIC, and the post houses don't use JVC I don't have the financial resources required by the bigger houses to do a transfer. I need help.

In a wild, sleepless weekend, you and a team will make
get a character, a prop, a line of dialogue and a
genre, all to include in your movie. By Sunday, June
25th, the movie must be complete. It will show at San
on-line at www.48hourfilm.com/sanfrancisco and
2. JOIN A TEAM. If you're interested in
participating, but not by leading a team, you can still
definitely be involved! There will be happy hours
where folks can meet team leaders and join their
3. ENJOY THE FILMS. Come on by to the see the

I've checked the cables a thousand times over and for the life of me I see nothing unattached. Still every time I go to print nothing happens and the disk utility tells me that there is a problem communicating between the two and that I should check my connections. What am I missing? The computer is a G4. It IS connected to the printer. Everything is plugged into it's power source too. It's not just the file because I tested other files from previous projects with the same result. Any thoughts? Please?

After spending a lot of time figuring out how to make my show into a one hour reality show appropriate for network TV, how to gain access to the top decision makers, and how the industry works in general, I finally have the eyes and ears of some of the biggest production companies in LA and NYC.

I've tried several but most were trial versions that did not allow save and none of them had the funcionality or reliability to get me to pay for the full version. If anyone knows of a good free application for creating looped gif animations or even to put out .bmp frame sequences from an avi file I would appreciate it. I relize these functions are intrinsic in many current high end video edit softwares but I don't have one right now.

Now, the guts:
I have 30 short films on my bench to cut, and 1 feature film. I am in production on a 30 minute TV Doc/Educational show that will go on air on cable (and possibly Satellite (knock wood)) in January-February, and 2 more short films.
SO, I need help, but as I have been a cutter for a while, and I understand, respect, and somewhat fear the power of the editor (when talking about my own children - er, I mean work - I want to have a relationship built on trust, before I go getting into bed with them.
I am in San Francisco, and currently dealing with Final Cut HD (4.5) on a G5 (2x2.5ghz, 2Gb RAM, 2x250Gb SATA). I use a Vs30u for input, and all the footage was generated with a DVX100A using the 24p Advanced setting. This makes input a royal bitch because I constantly get breaks in the VFR/Pulldown.
Anyways, the long term goal of this is to find a couple of editors, or hell, even ONE (Walter Murch where are you?), around which I can form a longterm post unit. I have fantastic people on my preproduction, and ESPECIALLY my production units, but we are woefully short of quality people in Post. As we all know, Post starts with Editors.
So, thats all for now. Show me your stuff Tribe!

After I graduated, I decided that editing might be something that I'd like to pursue so I bought Avid Xpress DV to learn the ropes and edited my second project last month. So what I'm wondering is, do you think that going to grad school to necessary? I already went down the internship route and didn't learn anything at all, so I'm thinking that grad school would be the best bet to understand all the aspects of post-production. or would grad school be a wasts of thousands of dollars that I don't have? Thanks a bunch!!!!!!!!!!! ~~ Kim :)

Here's a copy of a letter I just got regarding class action lawsuits and the WGA.
Gotta keep people informed.

_____________________________________________________________

Dear Reality Television Employee:
As most of you know, Writers Guild of America, west has recently filed two class action lawsuits (the "WGA actions") on behalf of storytellers who worked on a total of 15 reality television series. The lawsuits seek to recover damages for multiple labor law violations, including failure to pay overtime compensation, failure to grant meal periods and record keeping violations.

We have recently learned that many of the potential class members in the WGA litigation have received in the mail a notice of settlement in a different class action, entitled Bill Greenberg v. EP Management Services ("Greenberg"). The Greenberg settlement arises out of a group of lawsuits filed several years ago. There is now a tentative settlement of those cases, involving most of the studios, independent producers and payroll companies in Hollywood. While the focus of Greenberg is payroll practices, not the failure to pay overtime, there is at least one area of overlap with the WGA actions: the companies' failure to keep accurate payroll records.

As the Greenberg notice states, any class member has the right to "opt out" of the settlement by sending a written notice to the Claims Administrator. The effect of opting out is simple: you give up the right to damages under the Greenberg settlement and remain free to pursue claims against the companies in other proceedings. Many reality employees involved in the WGA's organizing campaign have asked us whether they should opt-out of the Greenberg settlement. While the decision is yours to make, the WGA is recommending that all named plaintiffs and potential class members in the WGA actions opt out of the Greenberg settlement so as not to compromise or weaken any of the claims we have made. The information below will tell you whether you are a potential class member in the WGA actions and, if so, how to opt out.

Am I potentially a member of the class in either of the WGA actions? You are a potential class member if, during the last three years, you worked in a "covered" classification for any of the following companies on any of the shows listed below. Covered classifications include Story Editor, Assistant Story Editor, Story Assistant, Assistant, Story Producer, Segment Producer, Supervising Story Producer, Producer, Senior Producer, Field Producer, Format Producer and Editor.

...and now I MUST finish it while my client is up here in the SF Bay Area. But I'm only on FCP 3. I guess I thought that by the time I finished it at my house I'd be updated to FCP 4...didn't happen. Now I'm sure you're saying, "why not just buy 4 now?" Coupla reasons: I'm still on OS 9.2 and 4 only runs on OSX (I can't upgrade OS's now because I'm in the middle of a big project and can't risk any of those wacky problems I've heard about); I've also heard that FCP 4 sucks compared to 3.

So what I'm asking is...is there anyone in the SF Bay Area who has FCP 4 or highter who would be willing to let me on their machine for about 1/2 a day? All the files are on an external drive so there would be no space issues. I know it's cheeky to ask if I could do this for free, so if someone wants to let me know what a good rate would be, that'd be fine too. I also bake a mean batch of snickerdoodles, am pleasant company...

Any other ideas/suggestion certainly welcome!!
