I can't seem to find a solution to this problem. I've searched the tribe and the web, any ideas?
I'm on a MacBook Pro with Final Cut Pro 5.1.
I have a Sony DSR-11 DVCam Deck connected via firewire and a LACie Terabyte Drive connected via USB for a scratch disk.
Final Cut recognizes the drive and displays ''VTR OK' at the bottom of the capture preview window.
All I see are color bars and 'Preview Disabled' in the preview window. No timecode or video footage.

Re: "Preview Disabled" - Final Cut Pro issue
Wed, May 10, 2006 - 8:35 PMAre the capture settings of FCP and the video format of the deck discordant (like NTSC vs PAL, HD vs DV)?

Re: "Preview Disabled" - Final Cut Pro issue
Mon, January 14, 2008 - 11:51 AMalas, I too am experiencing this problem. Everything is set up appropriately. No Caps lock etc. I to am connected via fire wire and it doesn't seem to matter which fire wire port the deck is plugged into. The maddening thing about it is that all worked well Friday afternoon. When I went to capture this morning I again had the "Preview disabled" in the capture window. The G5 controls the deck (DVC Pro) but there's no video to be had. It seems to be an intermittent problem but you never know when it's going to happen, making life difficult. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: "Preview Disabled" - Final Cut Pro issue
Mon, January 14, 2008 - 12:34 PMI too am having the sam problem you describe. I'm using a G5 and get the same color bars with "preview disabled message." Worked well Friday and now it's Monday and the message is back. Seems to be intermittent which makes it frustrating. I'm using a DVC Pro deck connected to the Mac via fire wire. The Mac controls the deck so the fire wire's working but no picture. I'm wondering if I'm hitting a key or button in Final Cut that's causing the problem. No "Caps lock or anything else on the keyboard so I'm stumped. Let me know if you find a solution.

Re: "Preview Disabled" - SOLUTION
Fri, February 15, 2008 - 6:56 AMOk, I just spent hours dealing with this but got it working:
I had just updated my OS, and gotten a new external HD, and then it was all color bars. First try running your deck straight to the back of your computer and see if that'll work. If it does then simplify your external hard drive set-up.
-Check iMovie, if iMovie can see your video then your set up is ok, it's probably a quicktime or ProKit update you need.
For me:
-iMovie HD was working fine, so It's not some firewire/daisy chain issue.
- getting timecode in log & capture in FCP, but still no video.
- For me it was a simple update, as of 2/15/08 there was a new quicktime (7.4.1 or so) and a new ProKit update, which was recommended for FCP and some other stuff. I installed the updates, restarted the computer and it all works. Not sure if it was the quicktime update or the ProKit, but right now I've got 2 G5s, a deck, and 3 terabytes all connected via a firewire hub and it works perfectly.
Hope this helps.
